NACOGDOCHES, Texas – NM State softball dropped another series on the road this weekend as Stephen F. Austin collected a pair of wins on Saturday to complete the weekend sweep and drop the Aggies to 19-24 on the year and 8-13 in conference play.
Once again, the Aggies struggled to produce any offense as they only scored two runs across the first 13 innings of play on Saturday at the SFA Softball Field.
Kayla Bowen's two-run home run in the seventh inning of the second game brought them back to within one of SFA late, however, the Aggies were unable to complete the late comeback.
Aggie pitching did a good job keeping the 'Jacks in check as
Felicia De La Torre and
Jordin King combined to allow just four runs on five hits and only two walks.
GAME TWO | NM STATE 1, SFA 2
Third Inning
A one-out double to left field put
Jillian Taylor into scoring position, giving the middle of the Aggie order an opportunity to drive in a run. That's exactly what
Riley Carley did as she hit a ball up the middle for an RBI single, driving in Taylor from third base, and putting the Aggies up 1-0.
Back-to-back doubles by the 'Jacks in the home half of the third brought the score back to even.
Emily Dix was able to escape the inning allowing just one run, despite the first three SFA batters reaching base to kick off the inning.
Fifth Inning
The Aggies failed to score anything in the fifth inning, sending SFA back to the plate. Gabby Garcia extended the 'Jacks' attack in the fifth with a two-out triple into the right-center gap. Mackenzie Bennett drove in Garcia with a hard-hit single to left field, giving SFA their first lead of the game.
GAME THREE | NM STATE 3, SFA 4
First Inning
Riley Carley put the Aggies on the board first with a two-out solo shot to center field – her 14
th home run of the season – putting the Aggies up 1-0.
SFA was able to get a pair of runners on in the bottom half, but Aggies starter
Felicia De La Torre quickly silenced their attack, leaving both runners stranded to end the first inning.
Second Inning
A leadoff double for SFA put a runner in scoring position early. Two batters later, Sydnee Hebert send a towering fly ball towards left field that just got out of the field of play for a two-run home run, giving SFA a 2-1 lead.
Third Inning
The 'Jacks added another pair in the third inning thanks to another two-run homer by Mackenzie Bennett, putting SFA up 4-1 on the Aggies. This also forced Aggies' starter,
Felicia De La Torre, out of the game in favor of
Jordin King.
Seventh Inning
Kristen Boyd got the top half of the seventh started with a leadoff single to left field. After the next two batters were retired,
Kayla Bowen stepped to the plate, looking to keep the Aggies rally alive. Bowen scorched a ball the other way for an opposite-field, two-run homer, bringing the Aggies back within a run.
UP NEXT
The Aggies are back at home next weekend for the season series finale against Abilene Christian, where the Aggies are prepared to honor three seniors:
Kayla Bowen,
Gabby Aragon and
Felicia De La Torre.
