Mike Rutenberg enters his fourth season with the NM State football team as the team's defensive backs coach and his first season as pass game coordinator.

Rutenberg was the Aggies' defensive back coach in 2011, focusing on the safety position. He helped guide a group that intercepted nine passes and recorded 32 pass break ups. Under Rutenberg, defensive back Jonte Green was named a second team All-WAC selection, while safety Donyae Coleman earned first team honors. Coleman led the Aggies in tackles with 133 on the season and recorded a team-high six interception, which led the conference and tied for seventh in the nation. His 133 tackles was also 11th in the country.
Rutenberg guided defensive back Davon House to a first team all-WAC selection for the second straight season. House led the team with two interceptions, including one for a touchdown. House left NM State as the Aggies' all-time leader in interception return yardage and interception returns for a touchdown. He was also named to the 2011 Senior Bowl. House was then drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The secondary was led by Donyae Coleman with 92 tackles, while Jonte Green, Alphonso Powell and House were fourth, fifth and sixth on the team in tackles on the season.
In 2009, Rutenberg shared secondary coaching duties with R. Todd Littlejohn but focused on the team's safeties. Under Rutenberg's guidance, safety Stephon Hatchett was third on the team in tackles with 98, including one interception and eight pass break-ups. Hatchett was No. 10 in the conference in tackles per game and No. 9 in passes defended. Rutenberg also coached safety Alphonso Powell, who recorded 72 tackles on the year. The Aggie defensive backfield ranked No. 36 in the nation, giving up just 202.9 yards passing per game.
Rutenberg joined the NM State staff in 2009 after three years at UCLA, including two seasons as the Bruins' defensive graduate assistant and assistant to then defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker while he worked towards a master's degree in education.
Rutenberg additionally worked with the secondary, assisting Walker and Tim Hauck. He was in charge of playbook administration, as well as opponent, and self scout breakdown of the Bruins. He also assisted with the defensive game plan each week and ran the scout team offense during practice. In 2007, he worked with a unit that ranked 29th nationally in total defense and helped recruit a top 10 class.
Prior to coming to Westwood, Rutenberg served as the assistant to Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs, dealing with the day-to-day football operations and administrative coaching assignments including daily football schedule and calendar, practice schedules and meeting presentations. He also worked with Gibbs on team and opponent statistical research projects.
Rutenberg served as a player personnel intern and assistant for the Redskins where he maintained the pro and college computer scouting systems and pro and college draft boards. He also helped organize in-season free agent workouts and evaluated Street Free Agent Film.
Rutenberg received his bachelor's degree in hospitality management with a concentration in law from Cornell in 2003.
