SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Mexico State women’s basketball team fell 65-56 to UTSA on the final day of the Holiday Classic in San Antonio, Texas. NM State is 3-10 on the season and continues the search for its first road win.

Junior Danesia Williamson finished the day with 22 points, 21 of those coming in the second half. She was named to the Holiday Classic All-Tournament team for her work on the weekend. She scored 28 points in the Aggies loss to Northwestern State on Saturday.

Sophomore Sasha Weber had 17 points on the day, good for the second best game of her season and second best of any scorer. The Aggies shot 33.9 percent as a team and held UTSA to 36.8 percent. The Runners out-rebounded the Aggies 41-37 and NM State had 20 points inside the paint.

“I thought our upper classmen really showed up today,” head coach Mark Trakh said. “It was nice to see two great games from Danesia and to see Abby (Scott) and Sasha playing well today. Now if we could get the rest of our freshman to get on board, we’ll be in great shape.”

The Aggies got on the board first with a layup by Weber in the first 30 seconds of the game. NM State continued with the next five points before the Roadrunners were able to get on the board.

The Aggies controlled the opening minutes of the game, going 3-for-5 for a 9-5 lead with just under 16 minutes on the clock. UTSA caught up to the Aggies at nine apiece and took over with a 9-2 run. Sophomore Abby Scott broke up the run with just over 10 minutes left with a three from the top of the arc.

NM State got back within one of the Runners as the teams traded points and the Aggies hit free throws from Weber and Scott. UTSA took seven of the next nine points for a 29-23 lead over the

Aggies before the teams were scoreless for the next three minutes.  

The half ended with the Weber hitting both her her free throws with less than a second on the clock to put the team back just four points on the Runners 34-30.

Weber closed out the half with 15 points to lead all scorers, while Scott had six in the opening half. NM State had a team-shooting percentage of 38.2 and UTSA shot 42.9 percent as a team. The Runners also out-rebounded NM State 20-14, but the Aggies had 10 points off turnovers.

The second half started with UTSA taking a 43-36 lead, but a three by Williamson cut the lead back to four with just under 15 minutes to go. In the next few minutes, the Runners got their lead over NM State back up to 10.  

A three by Williamson with 7:10 left in the half broke up a 12-3 run by UTSA and helped NM State with its first basket since the 15:41 mark. Two free throws by Williamson helped NM State get back within 10 of UTSA.

Williamson continued her success in the second half with a layup from the right side that got NM State within just eight of the Runners in the final three minutes. She sank a three from the left corner to put NM State back just five points before UTSA got it back to seven with a jump shot.

In the final minute of play, NM State hit one free throw and UTSA got two for a 65-56 win over the Aggies.

NM State opens the 2014 Western Athletic Conference season on Jan. 4, against Grand Canyon at the Pan American Center. The game marks the first home for the Aggies in over a month. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
