SEATTLE – The New Mexico State volleyball team defeated Seattle U 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-13) in the Connelly Center to hold on to first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings, Saturday, Nov. 2
It was a hard fought match but the Aggies picked up the win moving to 15-10 on the year and 10-2 in WAC play. Red shirt sophomore Bradley Nash led the Aggies with 13 kills, while adding two digs and three block assists. Fellow red shirt sophomore Gwen Murphy had an efficient night marking a .667 hitting percentage with 11 kills on 15 swings with just one error.
NM State struggled early in the serve-receive game allowing seven service aces, although the Aggie block was great out-blocking Seattle U 15-5. Senior Preslie Alexander had another good performance with 10 kills, two digs and three block-assists to help give the Aggies a one game lead in the WAC standings.
“You’re have to give credit to Seattle for the tough match but it was great to see us come out and win the game,” said head coach Mike Jordan. When asked about his team hitting .444 in set four while holding the Redhawks to a negative hitting percentage to seal the win, Jordan mentioned “We were competing pretty well and we stepped it up on the block. Our serving was also tougher in the set and we were able to put it away.”
Nash put up five kills in set one but a couple of calls that went against the Aggies led to a 25-23 loss. NM State bounced back in set two holding the Redhawks to a .089 hitting percentage and took advantage of two consecutive Seattle attack errors to gain momentum and win 25-23.
The Aggies fought hard to win set three with Nash marking five kills and Murphy going 4-of-4 offensively. With the Aggies down 24-23 Nash came up big with a service ace before Alexander and Nash put it away with a kill a piece. NM State dominated set four winning 25-13 holding the Redhawks to a negative hitting percentage.
The Aggies take on Grand Canyon, Monday, Nov. 4 at 7p.m. with coverage on the radio in Las Cruces at KSNM AM 570.
