LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State soccer team ended the 2013 season with a 2-1 win in double overtime over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, Nov. 3. NM State snapped its four game losing skid and concluded the season with a 5-13-2 record.

“This was a very important win for us. Without having the playoffs to play for, it was about not letting those six seniors leave without getting another victory. That’s something that we deserved several times over the last three or four weeks,” head coach Blair Quinn said. “It was very important to me that we didn’t let them to leave without that good taste in their mouths and we found a way to find that second goal in the game that we have been looking for.”

Bakersfield struck first with a goal just 15 minutes into the game. A long shot from the top of the box sailed in after the Aggies left the goal undefended for a brief moment.

“Like I said on Friday, I’d be disappointed if we didn’t go into double overtime,” Quinn said. “It has kind of become the mantra for the season I think.  And what happens with this team is that every time we are in this situation, we are good enough to win. We just unfortunately haven’t done it until today.”

NM State left the first period trailing 1-0, but came back in the second half for a goal by Mary Kate Koziol in the 66th minute. Bree Luhrsen booted a long pass across the field to Koziol who turned that into her third goal this season.

As is customary for the Aggies, the game was forced into double overtime with a 1-1 tie. NM State came up with the second goal with just six minutes remaining in the final period to win off Devin Hart’s first collegiate goal. Salina Lucero’s shot was deflected by the Runners, giving her to chance to pass across the box to Hart for the Aggie goal.

“Devin (Hart) finally scored her first goal, and you can’t wait much longer than the last game of the season to get your first one, but I think now that she’s got that one they’ll come more often.”

NM State ends the year with a 2-9-1 conference record. Although not competing, the Aggies play host to the 2013 WAC Soccer Tournament on Nov. 8 and 10. Game one of the tournament is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8.
