LAS CRUCES, N.M. (June 14)-The Marvin Menzies Little Aggie Basketball Camp begins on Monday, June 17 with a special visitor. Gov. Susana Martinez is stopping by camp at the Pan American Center at 10 a.m. to discuss her new reading program, “Nothing but Net.”
Last month, Martinez launched four summer reading challenges for New Mexico children. Menzies, Aggie football head coach Doug Martin and Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston helped the governor kickoff the program with a visit to Branigan Library, May 24. The programs are sponsored by a variety of statewide community partners and offer an array of exciting prizes for participating students and winners.
The summer reading challenges are designed to stop the "summer slide," where students often lose a portion of their reading proficiency during the summer months and must catch up on their skills when they return to school in August.
Under each reading program, students who read six books will receive a few small prizes, and those who choose to read an additional six books (and in some cases, submit a short write-up) will receive further awards and be eligible to win a grand prize.
