DENVER (April 18)- The 2012-13 Academic All-WAC men and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, women’s swimming and diving and gymnastics teams have been announced. New Mexico State placed 37 winter student-athletes on to the list. The Aggies now has 96 academic all-conference honorees this season after 59 from the fall semester.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
“We are very proud of our student-athletes as they continue to be at the forefront of the Academic All-WAC honorees,” athletics director Dr. McKinley Boston said. “We’re proud of the work they did this winter both in competition and in the classroom.”
Sophomore K.C. Ross-Miller represented the men’s basketball program, while seniors Chrissy Fletcher, Malia Magazzeni and Kelsie Rozendaal, and sophomores Elena Holguin and Simone Ruedin were women’s basketball honorees.
“We are very proud of K.C. and the effort he has made in the classroom,” men’s basketball head coach Marvin Menzies said. “This is a great accomplishment for him and our program.”
“We are very proud of our student-athletes, and their dedication not only on the basketball court but especially in the classroom,” women’s basketball head coach Mark Trakh said. “We hope to continue this tradition of academic excellence for years to come.”
Women’s indoor track and field honorees are seniors LaSasha Aldredge, Adrienne Larson, Camille Schultz, Courtney Schultz and Madelyn Stoltze, juniors Christiana Barela, Kelsey Brannan, Rylie Hightower, Diana Hawk, Zoe Meade, Kayla Nagunst, Alishia Perkins, Carly Porter, Gael Sanchez, Horlexus Willis, sophomores Taylor Black, Caroline Lewiecki, Victoria Trujillo and freshman Marissa Gonzales.
“We are pleased to have 19 student-athletes on the Academic All-WAC list,” track and field head coach Orin Richburg said. “It just shows the hard work that our athletes are putting into not only the track but into the classroom as well.”
The Aggie swimming and diving squad had 12 honorees including seniors Kirsta Bezenek, Alex Fenton, Haley Gansneder and Karen Philpot, juniors Tricia Kiss, Jaymee Porter, Terrin Seaver, Alessandra Zuniga and Brianna Zuniga, and sophomores Kaitlyn Hogan, Jessica Legge and Kara Schweitzer.
“Our team has great high expectations for what they do in the classroom,” swimming and diving head coach Rick Pratt said. “It is an honor to work with young ladies that perform in that manner in the classroom. I’m really proud of our academic efforts. We had a 3.5 G.P.A. in the fall, which was tremendous and a reflection on the culture of our team and the academic support that we get here at New Mexico State.”
