LAS CRUCES, N.M. (April 4) – New Mexico State’s softball team looks to get back to the NM State Softball Complex to meet UT-Arlington for a three-game series April 5-6. Friday afternoon’s game is set to be televised on AggieVision with the Saturday doubleheader live on KSNM AM570. NM State goes into the conference series with a 5-1 WAC record and 23-13 overall. The Aggies welcome the Mavericks with a 17-16 season record and 2-4 in conference play.

Looking Back

·         NM State finished the week with 56 hits and 43 runs through five games. The Aggies had 36 of those hits in their first road conference series against Utah State. Sophomore Staci Rodriguez finished the week with four home runs and nine RBI, while senior Teresa Conrad worked for eight RBI with two homers. The Aggies boasted a team batting average of .354 with nine doubles and nine stolen bases. The Aggie pitching staff worked for a 5-0 record in the circle with 16 strikeouts and a 2.92 team ERA.

Up Next

·         The Aggies are at home for the second straight week for five games. NM State starts the week by hosting No. 19/21 Arizona on Tuesday, April 9. NM State then turns back to WAC competition as it welcomes UTSA for three games April 12-13.  

About the Aggies

·         The Aggies boast a 5-1 WAC record (23-13 overall) going into the week against the Mavs. As a team, the Aggies have plated 49 runs in six games and tallied 68 hits with 10 home runs. This season, NM State is hitting .303, while holding their opponents to a .277 batting average.

·         Eight Aggies are hitting above .300 this season with senior Amber Olive leading the way with a .416 hitting average.

·         The Aggie pitching staff holds a .286 ERA going into the weekend with three saves and a combined 141 strikeouts. Alex Newman leads in the circle with a 2.37 ERA and an 11-8 record with two saves.

·         NM State is second in the WAC just behind San Jose State, which has a matching 5-1 league record, but is 27-11 overall. The Aggies lead the WAC with a seven-game winning streak.

The Opponents

About UT Arlington

·         The Mavs are just over .500 this season with 17-16 overall record and a 2-4 start to WAC play.

·         Most recently, the Mavs were swept by Louisiana Tech in three games. NM State went 2-1 to win the series over La Tech just two weeks ago.

·         UTA looks to right handed hurler Teri Lyles to help out this weekend with a WAC-leading 1.80 ERA through 124.2 innings pitched. Callie Collins is also solid in the circle with a 2.31 ERA.

·         The Mavs are fifth in conference right now with a tied conference record with Seattle U and Texas State.

Aggies vs. Utah State

·         Friday afternoon’s game marks the 18 time the teams have faces off, but the first time as conference opponents.

·         NM State leads the series 9-8 all time with the Mavericks taking the most recent meeting in 2010 4-1 in Arlington.

In the Lead

·         Senior Amber Olive continues to lead the Aggies with a .512 batting average and 52 hits this season. She is 14-17 on stolen bases and has helped the Aggies with 16 RBI. She has started each of the team’s 36 games and has seventh extra base hits, including a home run.

Second-Year Power

·         Sophomore Kelsey Dodd is third on the team in batting average (.351) through the first two weeks of conference play. She has five home runs off 32 hits for a total of 27 RBI this season. She had six RBI a week ago against Utah State, helping NM State to sweep the series. She is second in the conference behind Rodriguez in RBI.

·         The Aggie leader in slugging percentage (.775), Staci Rodriguez is leading the WAC in that category and leads the conference with 42 RBI and 13 home runs this season. She also leads the league with 13 home runs.

Power in the Circle

·         Senior Pitcher Alex Newman pitched 106.1 innings, has 52 strikeouts, and boasts a 2.37 ERA through her 25 appearances in the circle. She goes into the weekend with a 11-8 record, two saves and seven complete games pitched.

·         As a pitching staff, the Aggies have worked for a 2.86 ERA this season with a combined for 141 strikeouts and seven shutouts.

·         Freshman Makayla McAdams pitched her first complete game as an Aggie in the 3-0 win over Utah State a week ago. She allowed just six hits, but notched her first shut out with not a single run crossing the plate.

Players to Watch

·         Staci Rodriguez has 42 RBI this season. She is just eight away from being fifth in the Aggie record book for RBI in a single season.

·         When stepping to the plate with bases loaded, senior Teresa Conrad is hitting .375 this season. She is hitting .300 overall.

·         Senior Amber Olive is good with runner on base. How good? She has 24 hits and a .471 batting average, helping the Aggies move runners around the bags. Olive also had nine RBI this season when hitting with two outs.

Three and Out

·         This season, NM State has worked for 78 innings where the Aggie defense and pitching staff has sent the opposing team away in order. 

 

Saved by the…

·         Senior right hander Alex Newman recorded her first save and win in the same game when she pitched NM State to a 10-5 win over Siena College on Monday, March 25. She has two saves on the season and a 10-8 overall pitching record.

·         Celisha Walker has one save on the season as well. She picked up her first save against Weber State in early March.

Bombs Away

·         The Aggies lead the WAC with 36 home runs this season. Nine of those came just last week in the doubleheader against Siena College and the three-game road series with Utah State. Sophomore Staci Rodriguez is the individual WAC leader in homers with 13 this season. She had four last week and is tied for the third most home runs in the nation, but sits at No. 23 on the list.

 

Big WAC Honors

·         (2/18) - Sophomore Staci Rodriguez was named WAC Hitter of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17 with a .429 on-base percentage and going 10-for-25 at the plate for NM State with two double, a sacrifice fly and a career-high 13 RBI with three home runs through the Aggies seven games.

·         (2/25) - Senior Teresa Conrad was named WAC Hitter of the Week for the week of Feb. 18-24 with a .600 batting average, an .800 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base percentage. She had a hit in each of the Aggies' four games last week, with two doubles, three runs of her own and one RBI and three walks. Conrad had two multi-hit games and reached base each of her four times at the plate against rival I-10 UTEP on Saturday, Feb. 23, helping NM State to a 5-4 win over the Miners in extra (8) innings.

Rival Domination

·         NM State beat in-state rival UNM Sunday, Feb. 10, in a 3-0 victory in 7 innings. The Aggies fell in the second meeting between the teams 10-9 after a rain delay in Las Cruces. The Rio Grande Rivalry was decided on March 19 as the Aggies made the trip to Albuquerque for a 2-0 win.

·         The Aggies then defeated I-10 rival UTEP 7-1 on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and came back to take the series with a 5-4 win over the Miners in extra innings (8) in El Paso on Feb. 22. The third and final game of the season for the rivals was postponed due to high wind warnings in the area.
