LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team moves .500 on the year after coming from behind to win 12-11 over La Salle off a Parker Hipp walk-off single that scored junior Michael Medina in the 10th inning at Presley Askew Field, Sunday, March 10.
The Aggies (8-8), who swept La Salle, fell behind 9-2 after two innings of play before sophomore Trey Higginbotham jumped on the mound in the second inning to stop the bleeding. He worked 3.2 innings and allowed two runs, neither of them earned, while striking out four batters.
"You have to credit La Salle for coming out and giving us the type of game it did," head coach Rocky Ward said. "I am proud of my guys for staying in there and fighting through it for the win."
NM State scored a run in the third and four in the fourth, while Aggie pitchers held the Explorers scoreless in the fourth and fifth. Senior Evan Mott entered the game in the fifth and worked 4.1 innings as he struck out a career-high seven batters.
The Aggies scored a run in the fifth after junior outfielder Quinnton Mack got on base with a walk. He stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch before junior Taylor Noyer picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Although La Salle posted two runs in the top of the sixth, the Aggies matched those two runs when junior Bobby Lecount hammered a two-run home run over the leftfield wall to pull NM State within one run at 11-10. The Aggies tied the game when freshman Derek Umphres scored from second on a throwing error by the La Salle shortstop.
After Medina led-off the 10th with a single, junior Tanner Rust, who was 3-of-5 with an RBI on the day, dropped a sacrifice bunt down advancing the runner. Hipp then finished off the Explorers with a walk-off single and his 11th RBI of the year.
Junior Christopher Bradley was the winning pitcher as he was in the game when NM State took the lead. He worked 0.2 innings and struckout one of the two batters he faced.
"It was good to see Bradley get the win today because he ran into some back luck earlier in the year," Ward said.
Next up for NM State is a two-game road trip to Norman, Okla. where it will take on nationally ranked Oklahoma on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12-13. For a complete schedule of Aggie baseball go online to www.NMStateSports.com.
