(Feb. 22) - The New Mexico State softball team begins its 19-game road
swing with four games at the Helen of Troy Field in El Paso, Texas, as the
Aggies face South Dakota and I-10 rival UTEP on Feb. 23-24.
After starting the
season with 12 home games, the Aggies make their first road trip to UTEP for a
weekend series versus South Dakota and UTEP. NM State worked to a 7-1 win over
the Miners on Feb. 12, in Las Cruces, but now head south for the final two
games of the three-game rivalry series.

After taking the early lead in the first inning,
the Aggies fell 10-9 to the New Mexico Lobos in the second edition of the
Battle of I-25 on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The Aggies woke up the board early with
three runs in the first inning. Fielding mistakes from both teams and five
illegal pitches by Lobo Lauren Soles resulted in the 10-9 final score.
After the weekend close to home, the Aggies head
to Las Vegas, Nevada for three days of play in the UNLV - Eller Media Stadium
Classic, March 1-3. Over the weekend, NM State will face host UNLV, CSU
Northridge, Weber State and DePaul.
Staci Rodriguez was named WAC Hitter of the Week for a .429 on-base
percentage and going 10-for-25 at the plate for NM State with two double,
a sacrifice fly and a career-high 13 RBI with three home runs through the
Aggies seven games last week.
Kelsey Dodd is hitting .382 so far this season with 13 hits and eight runs
with nine RBI. She has started every game this season for the Aggies
State beat in-state rival UNM Sunday, Feb. 10, in a 3-0 victory in 7 innings.
The Aggies fell in the second meeting between the teams 10-9 after a rain
delay in Las Cruces. The Rio Grande Rivalry wraps up on March 19 in Albuquerque.
Aggies then defeated I-10 rival UTEP 7-1 on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
Power in the Circle
Pitcher Alex Newman pitched 38.0 innings, has 21 strikeouts, and boasts a
2.39 ERA through her 10 appearances in the circle. She goes into the week
with a 4-3 record.

About South Dakota
The Coyotes (6-4) have yet to play in the
comfort of their home stadium in 2013. Having already faced and beat UTEP 6-1
in its season opener, USD has four players hitting above .300 with Allie Daly
leading the way with a .343 average. She's had 12 hits this season with 13 RBI
and nine runs of her own.
Top hurler for the Coyotes is Erica Denney with
a 2.29 ERA and 6-5 pitching record. She has pitched four complete games and has
Madison Frain (2-1) leads the way with 21
strikeouts in her 19.2 innings pitched. She has allowed seven earned runs, good
for a 2.49 ERA.
The Miners are 5-6 starting the season, with one
of those losses coming at the hands of NM State just over a week ago.

Six hurlers see action in the circle, but it is freshman Danielle Pearson and
senior Colleen Hohman that rule the round with a 3.04 and 4.48 ERA,
respectively. Hohman has a 2-3 record in her 25 complete innings with 28
strikeouts. Pearson has 27.2 innings under her belt with 17 strikeouts and 104
At the plate, junior transfer Erika Arcuri leads
with a .382 batting average with 13 hits and seven runs.
Freshman Kawehi Natane has the best slugging
percentage (.529) and has tallied four extra-base hits in her 11 games.
