LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team took on Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a doubleheader falling 13-8 in game one before winning 16-8 in game two at Presley Askew Field, Saturday, Feb. 16 to move to 2-2 on the year.
The Aggies plated 24 runs on 22 hits with junior Tanner Rust and senior Kyle Phillips leading the way with four hits each. Senior Michael Ormseth, a Las Cruces native, started game one throwing 5.2 innings while picking up eight strikeouts in a no-decision. Senior Casey Collins of Glendale, Ariz. earned his first victory throwing 6.0 innings in game two.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Aggies struggled offensively in the first three innings of the game before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an early 5-3 lead. NM State tallied three walks, a double and two singles with senior Bobby Lecount earning an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field during the inning.
After the Panthers scored on a double in the top of the fifth, the Aggies scored two of their own when Lecount hit a double to centerfield to bring in Tanner Rust and Parker Hipp. NM State was up 7-4 heading into the sixth inning when UW-Milwaukee crossed the plate two more times to pull within one.
The Panthers caught fire scoring seven runs in the eighth inning as NM State cooled down marking only two hits in the final three innings of the game. Right hand pitcher Tim Torsney threw well to get the Aggies out of the game picking up two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work as he did not allow a hit.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Aggies started game two much different than game one posting five runs on four hits in the first two innings as the UW-Milwaukee starter struggled to find control. He (Eric King) allowed four walks and a wild pitch with NM State scoring five runs before being pulled in the second inning.
Outfielder Michael Medina started an Aggie rally with a single to leftfield in the top of the fourth. Lecount picked up another RBI with Medina scoring from second to give the Aggies a 6-2 lead. After the Panthers crossed the plate three times in the top of the fifth, NM State scored twice in the bottom of the inning taking an 8-5 lead.
Medina ended the game going 3-of-4 at the dish scoring three runs and picking up two RBI. Lecount went 2-of-3 with two runs and three RBI. Lecount picked up a single in the sixth and Medina walked in the inning as NM State scored three more times to extend its lead to 11-5.
UW-Milwaukee kept the game interesting scoring three runs in the seventh but the Aggie offense was consistent scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning with freshman Kent Blackstone blasting a triple to right-centerfield to give his team the momentum to score another three in the eighth to win 16-8.
The Aggies head out for an eight-game (10-day) road trip starting with the Keith LeClaire Classic hosted by East Carolina. NM State faces East Carolina, Friday, Feb. 22 at 3:00 p.m. (MT), before taking on Illinois, Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4:00 p.m. (MT). The Aggies finish the weekend against Ohio on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
