LAS CRUCES, N.M.
(Feb. 8, 2013) - The 2013 edition of the New Mexico State baseball team will
be on display for the first time on Saturday (Feb. 9) as the team takes on
former Aggie players during the Annual Alumni Game.
Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. (MT) at Presley Askew Field and
admission for all fans is free.
Although the game is a mix of competition and fun, the current Aggie
squad will have their hands full as the alumni team will consist of some the greatest
baseball players to put on an Aggie jersey, including two former All-American
Topping the list of alumni players is one of NM State's all-time
greatest hitters, Billy Becher. Although
he only played in Las Cruces for two seasons (2003-04), Becher set numerous
Aggie single-season and career hitting records.
In 2003, Becher set NM State's single-season record in hits (105),
home runs (32) and RBIs (118). The first
baseman concluded his Aggie career in 2004 and left as NM State's career leader
in home runs (57) and RBIs (208), records he still holds today.
Becher was named an All-American by numerous organizations and
publications after each of his two seasons at NM State.
Also joining the alumni squad will be former Aggie outfielder Mark Aranda,
who played at NM State from 2004-05. In
2005, Aranda gave the Aggies an All-American for three consecutive seasons
after he was a part of the Louisville Slugger All-America list. That season Aranda hit 22 home runs and had
85 RBIs. He finished his career with 38
home runs, which puts him in a tie for third all-time among Aggie players.
The alumni team will also feature a couple of players from last
season's WAC championship squad.
Zach Voight, who was recently drafted by the Chicago White Sox, will
also make his way to Las Cruces to participate in the alumni game. Voight was NM State's shortstop during the
2011 and 2012 seasons. He finished last
season with eight home runs and 56 RBIs, both second-best on last year's
team. After the season, Voight was
honored by being placed on the first-team All-WAC team.
Joining Voight from last season's team will be left fielder Tanner
Waite. Waite, who also played for the
Aggies in 2011 and 2012, led the nation in walks last season with 69. He also led the NM State team in 2012 with 55
runs scored and four triples on the season.
Among other former players joining the alumni squad are: middle
infielder Richard Stout (2007-09), who is the Aggie all-time leader in career
walks (142), second in runs scored (188) and third in stolen bases (69);
infielder Leo Aguirre (2007-10), who ranks fourth all-time for NM State in
doubles (44) and RBIs (160); and pitcher Frankie Duran (2006-09), who, prior to
last season, held the record for most appearances for a pitcher in an Aggie
uniform with 91 total appearances.
