LAS VEGAS, NEV. (Feb. 3) - The New Mexico State men's tennis
team fell for the second straight dual with a 4-2 result to the Southern Miss
Golden Eagles. The Aggies are now 3-3 on the season.
The Aggies slipped at the first two spots of doubles play, giving
the point to the Golden Eagles. The third doubles match was left unfinished
after Southern Miss claimed the first two matches 81 and 8-5, respectively.
"It was a slow start for us on doubles and that cost us the
point," head coach Carlos Vargas said. "In singles, it was a battle at most of
the positions. It just goes to show that we still have room for improvement."
With singles play ongoing, senior Luis Ramirez claimed his first
win of the weekend in straight sets. Claiming the top singles point 6-3, 6-3,
Ramirez helped the Aggies to their two points on the day.
The other Aggies point came from junior Marc Westgate in
three tough sets. The Loughborough, England native battled in the first set
6-7, but Ben Feldmann was able to claim the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.
The Aggies faltered at the second, fifth and sixth spot,
giving the win to Southern Miss.
The Aggies waste little time before getting back in action
versus UT-Pan American on Feb. 9. The Aggies then open conference play against
UTSA on Feb. 10. Both matches are set for 10 a.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
