Moscow, Idaho (Jan. 19)-In a tightly contested dual meet, the New Mexico State swimming and diving team suffered a 154-144 loss at Idaho, Jan. 18.
"We had a great meet," head coach Rick Pratt said. "Although we didn't come home with a win that does us no justice as to how well we did. We won eight events, and the meet could have gone either way. We had a lot of great swims with many in-season best times. I am very proud of how the girls swam."
Sophomore Jessica Legge had an outstanding meet with three individual victories. Legge won both the 100 breaststroke (1:03.78) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.71) en route to breaking Idaho's pool records in the events. She also captured top honors in the 200 individual medley.
Freshman diver Audrey Ruiz had a breakout meet as she led the Aggies and qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. She finished second on the 1-meter (271.88) and fourth on the 3-meter (242.78).
The Aggies opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay with the team of junior Tricia Kiss, Legge, freshman Dorottya Lennert and senior Alex Fenton.
In the distance freestyle, the Aggies swept the 1,000 free with freshman Emily Nightingale taking first-place honors, and senior Haley Gansneder and freshman Kenzie Soper following in second and third, respectively.
"To travel this far and swim as well as we did really goes to show how tough and passionate our team really is," he said. "Great job to Idaho who had a really great meet as well."
In the other freestyle events, junior Terrin Seaver won the 100 free, freshman Nicole Brennecke won the 500 free and was second in the 200 free.
The Aggies won the 100 back with Kiss leading the way in first place, and Seaver taking third. Kiss also claimed runner-up honors in the 200 back and third place in the 200 IM. Lennert paced NM State in the butterfly events with top honors in the 100 fly and second place in the 200 fly.
The Aggies conclude the regular season, Feb. 2, when they host in-state rival New Mexico in Las Cruces.
