LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 22) – The New
Mexico State men’s golf team sits in 11th place after finishing the first two
rounds of its home tournament, the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, on Monday.
The Aggies finished two rounds of
play at the New Mexico State University Golf Course with a two-round total
score of 18-over-par 586. The team
finished with identical scores of 9-over-par 293 after each of the day’s two

Justin Shin who is in a tie for ninth with three other golfers heading into the
final round. Shin shot a 2-under-par 69
during the second round to give a total score of 1-under-par 141 (72-69) after
Among the other four golfers
compromising the Aggie team, senior Derek Baade finished with a two-round total
score of 6-over-par 148 (74-74) placing him in a tie for 41st, junior Willie
Hogan is in a tie for 50th with a 7-over-par 149 (74-75), junior Zack Adams
sits at 8-over-par 150 (73-77) in a tie for 59th and senior Miko Alejandro
finished in 69th place with a total score of 12-over-par 154 (79-75).
NM State also has three golfers
participating as individuals. Junior
Brett Walker matched Shin’s 2-under 69 during the first round of the day. Walker finished the second round in a tie for
17th with a total score of 1-over-par 143 (69-74). The Aggies also have two freshmen competing
as individuals. Joey Martinez sits in a
tie for 29th place after two rounds with a total score of 3-over-par 145
(74-71) while Taylor Mihok finished with a 15-over-par 157 (77-80) to place him
in a tie for 73rd.
Overall, Wichita State, which was
in a tie for third after round one, leads the tournament with a two-round total
score of 3-under-par 565 (283-282). UTEP
held the lead after the first round after shooting a 4-under-par 280, but the
Miners fell into a tie for third with Texas State after the afternoon round,
two shots behind Wichita State. UNLV has
held fast in second after each of the first two rounds. The Rebels are one shot behind the leader
heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Individually, Chris Gilbert of
Kansas and Blake Biddle of UNLV share the lead at 6-under-par 136. The pair hold a three-shot lead over a trio
of golfers including Kolton Lapa of Nebraska, Kevin Penner of UNLV and Texas
State’s Juan Diego Plasencia.
The Aggies started the day by
finishing in 10th place after the first round with a score of
Individually, Ryan Werre of
Texas-San Antonio shot a 4-under-par 67 to lead after the first round. Three golfers finished one shot behind Werre
at 3-under-par 68 including UTEP’s Ross Rotwein, and second round leaders
Gilbert and Biddle.
After round one, NM State’s best
round was shot, not by an Aggie team member, but by Walker, who was
participating as an individual golfer.
Walker shot a 2-under-par 69 during the first round which placed him in
a tie for fifth with four other golfers after the morning round.
The tournament concludes Tuesday
with a final 18-hole round starting with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.
