SAN DIEGO (Sept. 29)-After two days of play at the San Diego State Fall Tennis Classic the New Mexico State women’s tennis team has four individual players and one doubles team with a win.

“It was a rough start to the weekend on Friday but I thought we battled back against some very competitive players,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “I was pleased with what I saw on the court despite the outcome of some of our matches.”

Friday was highlighted by individual victories by freshman Lisa Roslanova and sophomore Denis Van Der Ben.  It took Roslanova a tiebreaker in the second set to defeat Pepperdine’s Taru Pangu, 6-3, 7-6 (6-1).  Van Der Ben also won in straight sets, but had a much easier time in her match.  She only lost two games in defeating Shelby Sinoway of Cal-State Northridge, 6-0, 6-2.  Both women advanced to the semi-final round on Saturday.

Among the other five singles players for NM State, senior Ginet Pinero lost to San Diego State’s Julia Wais (6-3, 6-2), junior Annemieke Witte lost to San Diego State’s Alicia Aguilar (7-6, 6-1), senior Jodie Williams lost to Dane Joubert of North Texas (6-1, 7-5), junior Ros-Polly Nguyen was defeated by Pepperdine’s Megan Moore (6-3, 6-3) and freshman Mia Brandt lost to Jessica Warren of Cal-State Northridge (6-1, 6-2).

The Aggie also had three doubles teams participating on Friday.  Pinero and Nguyen lost to the team of Man-Son-Hing and Yang from Cal-State Northridge (8-1), Witte and Brandt lost to the team of Guillermo and Moore from Pepperdine (8-4) and the team of Williams and Van Der Ben lost to San Diego State’s Somoracz and Nguyen (8-5).

All winners moved on to the semi-final round on Saturday while the rest of the field competed in the consolation bracket.

Saturday started with Roslanova losing in her semi-final match to Franziska Sprinkmeyer of North Texas (6-2, 6-4) and Van Der Ben losing to San Diego’s Idil Haciriafoglu (6-3, 6-4).

Pinero won her match on Saturday against Valentina Starkova of North Texas (6-4, 7-6).  The win now puts her in the final match of the consolation bracket against Laura Class of San Diego.

Also playing Sunday in the final match of her consolation bracket is Nguyen, who defeated Cal-State Northridge’s Maria Pistalu (6-4, 6-3) to advance.

Pinero and Nguyen will also be playing a consolation final as partners after defeating the team of Joubert and Serchenko of North Texas on Saturday.

The final day of competition will be on Sunday with all Aggie individuals and doubles playing one more match.  For final results log on to NMStateSports.com.
