LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 16) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team wrapped up the final day of the Aggie Invitational by claiming four wins in six matches at the NM State Tennis Center Sunday.

The day featured junior Annemieke Witte competing for a title in the singles final of the White bracket against Martina Trierweiler of UTEP. The Aggie broke serve early in the first set to go up a break but the Miner would later break back to force a tiebreaker. Witte claimed the first pair of points in the breaker but Trierweiler came back to claim the set at 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreak win.

In set two, the Miner went out in front on a service break to claim a 5-3 advantage. Witte held serve to make it 5-4. Under pressure, Trierweiler was able to hold serve to fend off the Aggie for a 6-4 set win to claim the singles title.

"It was great to see the team in action again," said head coach Ivan Fernandez. "Overall we had a solid performance, especially from Annemieke. She had a great tournament by making it to the finals against UTEP's No. 1 singles player in senior Martina Trierweiler. Annemieke had chances in both sets and fought extremely hard before falling. I'm very proud of how well she is playing this fall and I know she wants to keep improving up in our spring lineup."

Five other Aggies played singles matches Sunday. Senior co-captain Jodie Williams rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Olivia Baltazar of UTPB. Junior Ros-Polly Nguyen also won in straight sets over Katarina Dikosavljevic of UT Arlington 6-2, 6-3.Sophomore Denise Van Der Ben fought off Maria Sablina of UNM with a 6-4, 7-6 victory.

NM State freshman Mia Brandt needed three sets to secure her win over the Lobos. UNM's Sarah Khan jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the Aggie freshman. Brandt returned the favor in set two, surrendering a single game at 6-1 to force a third set superbreaker. The Aggie posted a 10-6 win in the third to claim the match.

However, UNM did post a win over the Aggies on the final day as Nina Grbac knocked off Aggie freshman Lisa Roslanova 6-2, 6-1.

"It was good to see the two freshmen Roslanova and Brandt take the court for the first time as Aggies," added Fernandez. "I know they will both play well for me during their careers here at NM State."

The Aggies won one out of three doubles matches on the day. Witte and Brandt posted an 8-2 win over UT Arlington. Williams and Van Der Ben fell 8-6 to UTEP while Nguyen and Roslanova dropped their match to UNM by the same score.

The Aggies take a break from competition next week before traveling to San Diego at the end of the month to participate in the San Diego State Fall Classic.
