LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State baseball team took the series from Wake Forest after defeating the Demon Deacons 13-9 in the series finale at Presley Askew Field, Sunday, Feb. 19.

The Aggies go to 3-1 on the year, while the Deacons fall to 1-3 after the season opening series.  Las Cruces native Michael Ormseth earned his first win as an Aggie after he worked six complete innings and tallied two strikeouts.  Senior closer Scott Coffman earned his first save of the year and the 15th of his career after working three complete innings and marking five K's.

"It was a great weekend for the Aggies and we did well on the mound," head coach Rocky Ward said.  "This is the kind of club that I think can win games either way."

The Aggies took a 4-2 lead after one inning of play but lost the lead after the Deacons scored three runs in the top of the third. NM State regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when five Aggies crossed the plate.  Two of the runs came on a single through the left side by Kyle Phillips.

Wake Forest posted another two runs in the top of the fourth and NM State answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to make the score 10-7 in favor of the Aggies.  After another two Deacons crossed home in the top of the fifth, NM State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth on a single after a throwing error by the Wake Forest pitcher that advanced Aggie catcher Zac Fisher over to third.  Fisher, who ended a 20-game hitting streak today, reached base on a walk.

NM State scored two more times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 13-9 lead before Coffman came in to finish off the Demon Deacons.

In a game that saw nine errors (five for NM State and four by Wake Forest) the Aggies were able to maintain the lead for all but one inning to take the four-game series from Wake Forest.

The Aggies now head to Houston, Texas for two-game series against nationally ranked Rice on Tuesday and Wednesday. The games will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.NMStateSports.com for a fee.
