In his fourth season at New Mexico State, Gerald Lewis was promoted to an assistant coach after three years as the Aggies’ coordinator of player development. His responsibilities include recruiting, scouting, game preparation and on-court instruction.

In 2009-10, the Aggies won the WAC Tournament Championship and earned its 18th NCAA Tournament berth in school history. NM State finished the season 22-12 after a near upset of No. 12 Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

In his first season in Las Cruces in 2007-08, the Aggies earned a share of their first WAC regular season title following a 12-4 record. NM State (21-14) appeared in its second consecutive conference tournament title game but missed the NCAA Tournament after falling in triple overtime in one of the most exciting conference championship games of the season to Boise State.

Prior to NM State, he was an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana. Lewis was a staff member of the SELU squad in 2004-05 that made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and tallied the best record in school history, 24-9.

Lewis played professional basketball in Europe for six years after he was a first team All-Southwest Conference selection at SMU. As a senior, Lewis was an all-conference honoree in 1993. That season, he recorded three triple-doubles and is one of only eight players in NCAA history to achieve such a feat. Other players on the list include Jason Kidd, Shaquille O’Neal and David Robinson. He also held school records for career steals, 209, and single-season steals, 79.

Lewis was a five-time all-star in the Croatian Basketball League when he played for Rijeka and Zadar, Croatia from 1994-00. He was the 1996 all-star game most valuable player.

Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree from SMU in 1993. He earned a master’s degree in education from NM State in August 2008. Lewis has a daughter, Kierra, (10).
