LAS VEGAS – New Mexico
State’s women’s tennis team wrapped up the third day at the Stacy Darling
Tennis Center with a tough day, Friday, Oct. 16, at the Wilson/Intercollegiate
Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships.
Sophia Marks trumped Denver’s
Christin Thompson 6-1, 6-0, in the Round 4 Qualifier of consolation singles,
but was eliminated by Northern Arizona’s Orsi Golovics, 7-6, 6-2, in the Fourth
Round.
“Sophia played tough the
whole tournament and left everything she had out on the court,” assistant coach
Ivan Fernandez said.
Ginet Pinero, NM State’s only
other player alive in consolation singles, dropped her match 6-0, 6-3, in the Third Round, to Utah’s Erin Monson.
“Pinero had a good run
after the first day of the tournament, but after playing 11 sets in two days,
it was tough for her to recover for day three of competition,” Fernandez said.
In doubles play, Marks and
Aleksa Costa were defeated by Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk and Emma Verberne 8-2, in
the Round of 16 of the main doubles draw. The loss drops the Aggies to the
consolation draw.
“We just didn't get out to
a good start and were not able to recover,” Fernandez said. “In a pro set of
doubles, if you don't start strong it can slip away quickly.”
