LAS VEGAS – New Mexico
State’s doubles team of Sophia Marks and Aleksa Costa cruised into the Round of
16 Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain
Region Championships at the Stacy Darling Tennis Center.
The duo, seeded ninth,
trounced UNLV’s Ella Bourchier and Rumy Terzieva 8-4 in the Round of 32 to
remain alive in the main doubles draw.
“It was a good win for
them,” assistant coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We have high expectations for that
team and we feel they have a chance to go far in the tournament.”
Marks and Costa will
battle Western Athletic Conference rivals, Nevada’s Maria Mizyuk and Emma Verberne,
tomorrow at 8 a.m., as they will try to advance to the quarterfinals.
After advancing to the
Round of 32 yesterday, Marks was knocked out of the main singles draw after
losing to UNLV’s Anna Maskaljun in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In singles consolation
play, Ginet Pinero downed Idaho’s Silvia Irimescu 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Air Force’s
Sarah Cassman 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Costa, Manon Sylvain and
Natalia Salum were all defeated in consolation play, but not before pushing
their matches to three sets.
“I was very pleased with
the way our players came out fighting today,” Fernandez said. “They left
everything out on the court and that’s really all you can ask of them.”
