LAS VEGAS – New Mexico
State’s Sophia Marks continued her strong fall play by opening with a win in
the singles main draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region
Championships, in Las Vegas, Nev., Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Marks defeated Utah State’s
Kristina Voytsekhovich in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 64 after
receiving a first round bye.
“Overall, we had chances to
win some of these matches, but just couldn’t get into them,” assistant coach
Ivan Fernandez said.
The only other victory on the
day for the Aggies came from Natalia Salum who defeated Weber State’s Elsje
Beneke, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of 128. Salum would go on to lose to
Colorado’s Camila Belassi, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 64.
Marks, who is the No. 9 seed
in the tournament, will look to advance tomorrow when she plays UNLV’s Anna
Maskaljun at 10 a.m.
In doubles, Marks and Aleksa
Costa are ranked No. 7 in the tournament. After receiving a first round bye,
they will play their first match tomorrow in the round of 32 at 8 a.m. against
UNLV.
