LAS VEGAS - New Mexico State had a tough second day at the UNLV Fall Invitational, as senior Sophia Marks was defeated by UNLV's No. 90 Kristina Nedeltcheva, in the semifinals of the top singles flight in Las Vegas, Nev., Saturday, Sept. 26.
Marks lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, a day after defeating Texas in the opening round of the first singles flight.
"Sophia lost a close one to UNLV's No. 1 player," assistant coach Ivan Fernandez said. "It was another tough day today."
In the second flight of consolation play, senior Aleksa Costa lost 2-6, 6-4, 3-0, after being forced to retire in the third set. She was defeated by Missouri's Kristen Bleakley. Sophomore Manon Sylvain bounced back in the second day of the tournament and beat Northern Arizona's Yumi Hasegawa 6-1, 7-5.
In doubles, Marks and Aleksa Costa were edged by Missouri 8-6, in the first flight of consolation.
In the third flight of consolation, Sylvain and partner Ginet Pinero trounced Northern Arizona's Yumi Hasegawa and Ana Mendes 8-1.
The Aggies are back in action Sunday in the final day of the tournament.
