LAS VEGAS – New Mexico
State’s Sophia Marks took down Texas’ Krista Damico in straight sets to advance
to the semifinals of the top singles flight in the first day of the UNLV Fall
Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Friday, Sept. 25.
Marks defeated Texas’ top
singles player Damico 6-3, 6-4 in her only singles match of the day.
“We had a lot of tough
matches,” assistant coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We fought hard. It was a great
win for Sophia.”
In other action, the Aggies
had a difficult time against some tough competition in singles play.
Aleksa Costa lost to Texas’
Caroline Larsson, 6-3, 6-2, and Manon Sylvain was defeated by Missouri’s
Kaitlyn Ritchie, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the second singles flight.
In the second tournament of
her career, freshman Ginet Pinero was downed by UNLV’s Adrienn Hidvegi 6-1, 6-2
in her first singles match of the UNLV Fall Invitational.
Sophomore Natalia Salum lost
to Texas’ Amanda Craddock 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the fourth flight
of the tournament.
In doubles, NM State lost
both of their matches of the day. Seniors Marks and Costa were defeated by
Texas’ team of Krista Damico and Craddock 8-3, in the semifinals of the top
doubles flight.
Sylvain and Pinero lost a
hard fought match against UNLV’s duo of Nives Pavlovic and Adrienn Hidyegi 9-7,
to round out NM State’s first day of the tournament.
The Aggies look to bounce
back tomorrow with the day’s matches beginning at 11 a.m. (MST).
