LAS
VEGAS – For the second straight week, New Mexico State’s women’s tennis team
will be tuning up for regionals by traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., Sept. 25-27,
to play in the UNLV Fall Invitational.
Joining
the Aggies at the tournament will be UNLV, Texas, Missouri and Northern Arizona. The
format for the tournament will be five flights of singles and four flights of
doubles.
“This
is going to be a strong event that will feature top 50 teams,” head coach Don
Ball said. “Every match will be stronger.”
As
the Aggies look to bounce back from injuries, seniors Sophia Marks and Aleksa
Costa will try to duplicate last week’s results when they won the top-flight
doubles title at the Miner Fall Invitational.
Marks
and Costa posted a 3-0 record that closed out with a convincing 8-1 victory
over UTEP.
Last
week, Costa was limited to doubles play due to a shoulder injury, but this
weekend she will play her first singles matches of the season.
Also, looking
to build on her first year as an Aggie, talented freshman Ginet Pinero aims to
put in another strong performance after beginning her career at NM State 3-1 in
singles.
The
Aggies won eight of 17 singles matches and five of nine doubles matches at the
Miner Fall Invitational.
Play
begins at 11 a.m. (MST) Friday through Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at the UNLV Fall Invitational.
