LAS VEGAS-The New Mexico
State men's tennis team put up a tough fight but fell to UNLV 5-2, in its first
match at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.
NM State's doubles team
Orlando Superlano and Jim Brouleau picked up an 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot over
the Rebels. This wasn't enough for the Aggies to pick up the doubles point as
UNLV clinched victories at the first and third position.
"We just didn't play up to
our potential today," head coach Don Ball said. "This is only our second match,
so we are still a few weeks away from getting our stride and they [UNLV] have
played a few more matches than us."
With the Rebels ahead after
the doubles round, The Aggies picked up two wins in singles play. At the No. 3
position, junior Arthur Surreaux took his match to the third set for a victory
against Attila Toth, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. At the sixth spot, Luis Ramirez also pulled
off a win for the Aggies.
Gustave Diep took his match
at the second position to a tie breaker before falling to nationally ranked
Luca Barlocchi. At No. 5, Matej Stakne took the match to a super breaker but
was defeated in an extremely close match.
Ball said his team fought
hard against the Rebels and he is proud of their efforts.
The Aggies battle Southern
Miss Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and continue for a third day in Las Vegas against
UC Riverside on Sunday.
