LAS VEGAS – New Mexico
State senior Gustave Diep was eliminated from the main singles draw Friday,
Oct. 23, at the Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Championships, but overall, the
men’s tennis team won five of eight matches on the day.
Diep fell to conference
rival, Nevada’s Wessim Derbel, 6-3, 6-2, to end his bid toward a title in the
main singles draw. He compiled a 3-1 singles record in the main draw, and will
now try to earn a spot in the finals of the consolation singles draw.
“Gustave played hard,”
head coach Don Ball said. “He played a spectacular three-and-a-half hour match
last night and we’re just proud of what he accomplished.”
NM State’s other two
singles players still alive in the consolation draw, Jim Brouleau and Matej
Stakne, picked up two victories to advance to the Fourth Round. Brouleau bested
Northern Arizona’s Andrew Reiff, 7-5, 6-3, and Montana State’s Pawel Turzanski,
6-4, 6-1. Stakne defeated Norhtern Arizona’s Patrick Shimmelbauer, 6-3, 7-6,
and Utah State’s Bryan Marchant, 6-3, 6-3.
Brouleau and Stakne
continued their strong efforts in the fall, with both only having lost three
matches all season.
“These are good
players,” Ball said. “They’re playing national level competition and we’re
excited about the prospects of the team.”
The Aggies’ only doubles
team left in the main draw was narrowly defeated in the semifinals by the
tournament’s No. 1 team. The duo of Diep and Eduardo Salas defeated Utah 8-4,
in the Round of 16, but lost in the next round, 9-8, to Denver’s Andrew
Landwerlen and David Simson.
“It was a high quality
match,” Ball said. “It was a tough loss, but it was just a great match on both
sides.”
In consolation doubles,
Brouleau and Arthur Surreaux, were downed by UNM’s Ben Dunbar and Jadon
Phillips, 8-6.
