LAS VEGAS – New Mexico State senior Gustave Diep paced the Aggies with two victories in the main singles draw Thursday, Oct. 22, to move on to the quarterfinals at the Darling Tennis Center.

Diep cruised in his first match 6-2, 6-4, against UNM’s Jadon Phillips, in the Round of 32, and then followed it up by battling another UNM opponent – Carl Ho in a three set thriller. Diep edged Ho 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.

“Gus played in a classy match,” head coach Don Ball said. “It was one of the best matches I’ve seen him play and it was just a great match on both sides.”

Diep will play the tournament’s 10th seed, Nevada’s Wessim Derbel, at noon Friday, in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw.

Also in the main singles draw, Matej Stakne lost to Utah’s Phillip Eilers, in the Round of 32 in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, to move him to the consolation draw.

“Matej played a great match,” Ball said. “He’s had a great tournament so far.”

The Aggies won four of eight singles consolation matches on the day. Jim Brouleau led the way for NM State by picking up two victories, moving him to the Third Round.

In the main doubles draw, Diep and Salas dominated Nevada’s Alex Daruty and Kristian Kuharszky, 8-2, to advance to the Round of 16. Brouleau and Surreaux were defeated by Utah State’s Nate Ballum and Alex Thatcher, 9-7, in the Round of 32.

In consolation doubles, the Aggies split two games. Brouleau and Surreaux beat Weber State 8-3, while Armando Morales and Stakne were defeated 8-0, by Montana State.

The Aggies ended the day with an overall 8-7 record.

“The team is coming together pretty good,” Ball said. “It was a great day all the way around.”

Diep and Salas look to continue to roll in the main doubles draw tomorrow when they face Utah’s Stephen Jacobs and Beniro Suriano at 8 a.m.
