Junior: Edwards was one of only two Aggie players to compete in all 12 tournaments that the NMSU men’s golf team participated in during the 2006-07 season. He ended the season with a stroke average of 75.43 and had seven rounds where he scored at or under par. Edwards fired a 69 in the second round of the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev., which was his lowest round of the year. In that tournament he tied for 16th, which was tops for NMSU. He would shoot another 69 in November at the University of Hawai’i Intercollegiate, where he had rounds of 71-69-71 for a 5-under-par 211, good enough for a third place finish. That was Edwards’ best finish of the season a finish that led the Aggies to a second place tie and that helped him earn Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Month for the month of November.
Sophomore: Edwards was named to the 2006 All-WAC team for the first time, while he competed in 10 tournaments for the Aggies and recorded an average of 73.28 in 29 rounds of play. He also made it to his first ever NCAA West Regional tournament in 2006 where he fired a 1-over-par 217. Matt had a great sophomore year coming up with three top-10 finishes, which made him second on the team in that category, and was named WAC men’s golfer of the week twice. His best tournament came at the WAC championship where he fired a 2-under-par 211 to pull of a first place finish, and become the first player to bring home an individual medal since 2002. Edwards also finished in the top-10 at the Border Olympics and the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, scoring a 1-under-par 215 and a 3-under-par 213 respectively. His low round happened to be the low round for the team in 2005-06 season. Edwards shot 65 in the second round of the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
High School: Prior to joining the New Mexico State men’s golf team this season, Edwards spent his freshman year as a student at UNLV. Edwards played his high school golf at Coronado High School in Henderson, Nev. Edwards captained the Cougar golf team all four years of high school and help Coronado to the state tournament three straight years. As a sophomore, Edwards and the Cougars went 10-2 and finished third at the zone tournament and fourth at the state tournament. As a junior, Edwards won the individual medal at both the zone and state tournaments as the Cougars also took home top honors at each tournament. As a junior and senior, Edwards was named the Male Athlete of the Year at Coronado High and as a senior, he earned academic honors.
