NM State Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Herb Wimberly

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Junior Tim Madigan carded a 6-under par, 65 in the final round of the 2009 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate to win his first collegiate tournament with a three round score of 9-under par, 204. Madigan is the second Aggie golfer to win the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in the last two years. He would tie with UNLV's Derek Ernst for the individual medalist spot.

 "I was doing everything right in the first two rounds except my finishing wasn't there, where as I finished 2-under in my last three holes today and that ultimately made the difference," Madigan said. "I'm excited to get my first collegiate victory and it feels really good to finally accomplish one of my goals as a college golfer."

As a team, the Aggies finished fourth overall with a three day score of 8-under par, 844, just one shot out of third place. In the final round, NM State shot 4-under par, 280.

"I said before the tournament that we needed some home cooking and we got it' head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. "Taking fourth in a tournament like this and the inexperienced team like this I'm very pleased. I'm really happy for Tim (Madigan). He has put a lot of hard work in and for him to finally get over that hump and get his first collegiate victory is going to be a spring board for him and thing to come for him the rest of the season."

Senior Ryan Word would finish tied for 19th overall with a three round score of 2-under par, 211, his best finish of the fall season. Word carded a final round score of 2-over par, 73. Sophomore Gaston De La Torre finished tied for 21st overall with a 1-under par, 212 for the tournament. In his final round, De La Torre recorded a 1-over par, 72.

Freshman Derek Baade shot his best round as an Aggie with a final round score of 1-under par, 70, placing him in a tie for 41st overall. His three round score of 4-over par, 217 is also his best of the fall season. Sophomore Miko Alejandro recorded his low round of the tournament in the final round with a 2-under par, 73. Alejandro finished tied for 73rd overall with a final score of 10-over par, 223.

Freshman Justin Shin tied for the best three round score for an individual golfer with a 4-over par, 217. He finished the tournament tied for 41st after a final round of 1-over par, 72. Freshman Will Holdridge carded a final round score of 2-over par, 73, placing him in a tie for 65th overall, finishing at 9-over par, 222 for the tournament.

Junior Ross Prachar rounded out the Aggie golfers with his third straight round of 7-ovrer par, 78. He finished in 91st place with a three round score of 21-over par, 234.

UNLV took the team title with a three round score of 23-under par, followed by Washington State (-15), Kansas State (-9), NM State (-8) and North Texas and Santa Clara at even par.

The Aggies will be back in action for their final tournament of the fall semester when they travel to Hawai'i for the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate, Oct. 2-4, in Kahuku, Hawai'i.
