LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The New Mexico State men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the 2009 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, Monday, Oct. 26, finishing with a team score of 4-under par, 564. After a first round score of 1-over par, the Aggies stormed back in round two with a 5-under par and sit in fifth after two rounds at the NM State Golf Course.
"We were probably a little tight to start the day," head Coach Scott Lieberwirth said. "Sometimes when you play at home you put a little added pressure on yourselves. I think a couple of the guys got off to slow starts but we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot like we have in the past. The guys bounced back in the afternoon and put together a nice round. I thought Ryan and Tim play very well and helped us climb back into the tournament. Tomorrow is another opportunity for us to jump up from fifth to hopefully in the top two."
Senior Ryan Word led the Aggies on the day. He was at even par, 71 after the first round before carding a 4-under par, 67 in round two, his lowest round of the year. Word is tied for 12th with a two round score of 4-under par, 138.
