EDINBURG, Texas – The New Mexico State baseball team takes their record to 23-3 after winning 9-8 over Texas-Pan American in 10 innings at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium, Thursday, March 26.
The Aggie were up 5-0 after three, 6-2 heading into the seventh and 8-3 after eight and a half, but the Broncs tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth when they put up five runs to take the game into extra innings.
The Aggies scored one run on no hits and left runners on second and third in the top of the 10th to go up 9-8, with the winning run crossing the plate when senior Bryan Marquez (Bonny Lake, Wash.) scored on a passed ball by the Broncs’ catcher.
In a game that lasted three hours and 50 minutes, red shirt freshman Scott Coffman (Albuquerque, N.M.) wrapped up the Aggie win going two complete innings, striking out one batter, while giving up only one hit and no runs. He picked up the first win of his Aggie career after staying calm on the mound to get the Aggies out of a bind.
Senior Tyler Sturdevant (Littleton, Colo.) was the starter for NM State and threw a no-hitter heading into the sixth while striking out six batters taking his team leading total to 32 strikeouts on the year.
At the plate it was Marquez who led the way for the Aggies going 2-of-4 with four RBIs one walk and three runs scored. Senior centerfielder Richard Stout also added to the Aggie offensive production with a 3-for-5 day at the dish, two RBIs and two runs scored. His one walk of the day takes him to 119 in his career, just one short of the career-record for NM State. Former Aggie standout Chris Fanning holds the career record with 120 walks from 1988-91.
NM State heads to Edinburg, Texas to take on UT-Pan American in the second game of the series March 27 at 5pm (MDT).
