LOGAN, Utah--
The New Mexico State women’s track and field team is in seventh place
after the second day of action at the 2009 Track and Field WAC Championships. Sophomore distance runner Amy Arenas
had an impressive performance in the 10,000-meter run. She brought home the silver medal and
scored eight team points with a time of 38:42.44.
“Amy had a great race,” assistant coach Paul Harkins
said. “She was as tough as nails
today. We are proud of her.
“Overall we had an okay outing, however I think we will be
better tomorrow,” Harkins added. “We
just need to keep working hard.”
The Aggies also recorded three team points in the shot
put. Junior throwers Jordan Veney was seventh with a throw of 43-07.25 and
Corissa Hutchinson was eighth from a toss of 43-07. Veney and Hutchinson recorded two and one points,
respectively.
Eight more points were recorded in the long jump. Senior jumper Sandra Anane placed third
with a jump of 18-07.75 and freshman jumper Jndia Cleveland claimed seventh
with a leap of 17-11.00.
Multiple Aggies are going to the finals and leading the
way is junior sprinter Leah Benton who placed first in the 100-meter dash
(11.8) and in the 200-meter dash (24.09).
In the 100-meter hurdles sophomore hurdler Devin Brooks
made the finals after placing eighth with a time of 14.64.
In the 800-meter run freshman Melanie Clay was fifth with
a time of 2:18.66 and sophomore Rayanna Fernandez was eighth after stopping the
clock at 2:21.15. In the 400-meter hurdles, Jordan Wood clocked a time of
1:06.75. All three are running in
the finals tomorrow.
The Aggies are competing in the final day of the 2009 WAC
Track and Field Championships, Saturday, May 16 in Logan, Utah.
