LAS CRUCES, N.M.-The New Mexico State swimming and diving team concluded the regular season with a 153-109 win over Northern Arizona, Saturday, Feb. 2, at the NMSU Pool in Las Cruces, N.M. The Aggies honored the team’s four seniors, Carolyn Bohm, Kelly Freeburn, Karen Kaufmann and Nicolin Lillhage, at the meet.
The Aggies won all five freestyle events with freshman Kelly Conrad taking top honors in the 50, 100 and 200 races. She also had a lifetime-best performance in the 200 free. Sophomore Liz Thomson collected first-place finishes in both the 500 and 1,650 free. Sophomore Tessa Bain contributed in the 50 free taking third while sophomore Meghann Percy was second in the 200 free.
Head coach Rick Pratt said he was happy with the Aggies showing on senior day.
“I think it was a team effort,” he said. “Everyone raced really tough and now it’s time to rest. I think we’re really confident after a great month of racing and it was special for the seniors to end on a win.”
In the backstroke events, junior Stephanie Peacock and Bain claimed the top spots in the 100 as sophomore Bonnie Taylor won the 200. Freshman Alannah Lawrence recorded a victory in the 100 breaststroke.
Sophomore Victoria Eickerman won the 100 butterfly and Lillhage set a season-best time in the event with a third-place finish. The Aggies also won the 800-free relay behind the team of Thomson, Percy, freshman Kelly Runestrand and Bohm.
The NMSU divers competed at the Air Force Diving Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 1-2. On the 1-meter springboard, freshman Kirstin Pickett led the way and finished in 16th place while freshman Amanda Schulte followed in 18th place. Then on the 3-meter, Pickett was 18th and Schulte recorded a 20th-place finish. In the first platform competition of the season, Schulte had a 31st-place showing.
