WACO, Texas – The New Mexico State Equestrian team went 2-1 overall at the Willis Invitational this weekend, with wins over South Dakota State, 11-5, and Tennessee-Martin. The Aggies tied UTM 8-8 but was awarded the win off of the raw score. The Aggies fell to Baylor in the first round 12-4.
“I’m very pleased with our team performance this weekend,” head coach Robin Morris-Walters said. “I thought the Western team rode very well all weekend and our Hunter Seat team really improved with each outing. This is a good start to our season and I can only see positive things for this team going forward.”
NM State recorded six Most Outstanding Players on the weekend and won the MOP in every Reining event.
Against South Dakota State, the Hunter Seat team won 6-2, while the Western team won 5-3.
On the Hunter Seat side, the Aggies sweep the Equitation over Fences, 4-0, as Shannon Dooley was named MOP after beating Jordan Goodall of SDSU, 79-66. Emily McConnell, Amber Tassel and Cori Cromwell all won their respective head-to-head match ups to give NM State the sweep. In Equitation on the Flat, McConnell defeated Jessica Andronowitz of SDSU, 68-60, as Julie Frey won the other point for the Aggies by beating Maddie Lewis of SDSU, 57-54.
The Western team, took Reining 3-1, as Tara Wilson earned MOP honors beating SDSU’s Danielle Baker 77-76. Brynn Larson and Jamie Story also won for the Aggies. In Horsemanship, the Aggies tied 2-2, as Rianna Storey defeated Shelby Webb of SDSU, 74-67.5 and Lauren DeVoe beat Danielle Dickerson, 73-72.5.
Against Baylor the Hunter Seat was shutout 8-0, while the Western team tied the Lady Bears, 4-4. Tara Wilson earned her second MOP of the tournament by defeating Baylor’s Shelbey Jackson, 73-70. Brynn Larson and Haley Newkirk also scored points for the Aggies in Reining. Lauren DeVoe was the lone Aggie to win her head-to-head match-up in Horsemanship, defeating Parris Rice of Baylor, 74.5-68.5
The Aggies wrapped up the weekend with a win over Tennessee-Martin, as NM State tied in the final score but won on the raw score total. The Western team beat UTM 6-2, while the Hunter Seat team fell 6-2.
In the Reining event the Aggies sweep the board, as Stefanie Story was named MOP with a 74-66.5 win over UTM’s Laney Hixson. Tara Wilson, Jaimie Story and Brynn Larson each earned a point for the Aggies in the Reining event as well. In Horsemanship, Lauren DeVoe earned MOP by beating Jordan Elmore, 77.5-70.5. Clarissa Edgerton also scored for the Aggies in Horsemanship with a 76.5-72 win over Cora Rogalski of UTM.
The Hunter Seat team earned one point in Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat. Hannah Swarthout was named MOP in Equitation on the Flat with a 80-72 win over Hunter Ralston. Amber Tassel earned the lone point for NM State in Equitation over Fences with an 83-59 victory over Nora Wilson of UTM.
The Aggies will be back in action on Nov. 1-2 in Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State and Fresno State.
