WACO, Texas – The New Mexico State Equestrian team opened the 2013-14 season with a tough loss to SMU, 10-9. The Western team won 6-3, while the Hunter Seat team came up short at 7-3. The Aggies are now 0-1 on the season.

“We saw a lot of good performances today,” head coach Robin Morris-Walters said. “The team moral at the start of this season is at an all-time high which give this team and edge. We had some first competition of the year mistakes but I feel we will get those corrected and compete for wins the rest of the weekend.”

The Aggies had two Most Outstanding Players on the day as Hunter Seat rider Emily McConnell defeated Julia Fowler of SMU, 81-64 in Equitation on the Flat, and Western rider Brynn Larson earned her first MOP of the season by defeating SMU’s Courtney Line, 70.5-0.

“Emily is a great leader for this team and I think her winning the MOP today is going to really set the tone for the rest of the Hunter Seat team,” Morris-Walters said. “Larson is a fierce competitor who rides aggressively and I think that will really help the Western team have that extra edge.”

In Equitation on the Flat, McConnell and Hannah Swarthout each earned points for the Aggies. Swarthout beat Greer Hindle of SMU, 78-62, as McConnell was named MOP. Amber Tassel was the lone Aggie to earn points for her team in Equitation over Fences, beating Alex Butterworth of SMU, 70-69.

The Western started off slow with a 2-3 loss in Horsemanship, as Larson defeated Kristen Schramm of SMU, 72.5-68 and Jessica Woolsey beat Morgan Redwine, 73-69.

The Aggies then blasted the Mustangs in the Reining competition with a 4-0 win. Larson was named MOP, while Marissa Bartmann handled SMU’s Redwine, 65-64, and Stefanie Story squeaked by Jaclyn White of SMU, 68-67. The tightest competition of the day was between NM State’s Tara Wilson and SMU’s Hannah McCain. Wilson would prevail with a 68.5-68 win, giving the Aggies the sweep. Haley Newkirk also rode in the Reining, tying her opponent, 66.5-66.5.

The Aggies will continue their road trip tomorrow at the Willis Invitational in Waco, Texas. NM State will face Baylor in the morning and South Dakota State on Friday and Tennessee-Martin on Saturday.
