Las Cruces, N.M. – Junior Hunter Seat rider Emily McConnell
will represent the New Mexico State equestrian team, Feb. 8, in the fourth-annual
Collegiate Equitation Challenge as part of the Winter Equestrian Festival in
Wellington, Fla., at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. McConnell is 4-3 on the season in Equitation
over Fences with one MVP honor.
weekend against Baylor, McConnell won both her Equitation on the Flat and
Equitation over Fences head-to-head match ups. She defeated Baylor’s Lindsey
Otis 76-71 in the Flat competition, while handling Sue Carol Thompson, 85-78.
event will be conducted utilizing the NCEA head-to-head bracketed format with
the 16 top collegiate riders from across the country. Participating riders will
compete over an equitation course that features heights up to three feet, six
begins at 12 p.m. MT with the preliminary round, which includes each of the 16
riders. The eight winners qualify for the finals to be held in the evening
session at 5 p.m. MT, while the remaining eight horses will contest a
consolation bracket immediately following the preliminary round. For the second
consecutive year, the competition will include a four-rider equitation on the
flat tournament that will occur during the finals.
