Martin, Tenn. – The New Mexico State equestrian team fell just short to South Dakota State 9-7, in the first day of the Skyhawk Invitational at the Ned McWherter Ag Pavilion on the campus of UT Martin.

"The team fought hard for the win today, though we came up short,” head coach Robin Morris-Walters said. “The hunter seat riders were solid and edged out South Dakota State on raw score, while on the western side we had some outstanding rides but too many penalties kept us from securing enough win points to take the overall win. We plan to come back strong against Fresno State tomorrow."

The Hunter Seat tied South Dakota State 4-4, while the Western team fell 5-3.

In Equitation over Fences, Emily McConnell defeated Megan Violand, 159-144, while Amber Tassel handled Marielle Golden, 110-60, In Equitation on the Flat, Hannah Swarthout beat Santana Wright, 154-147, as Laura Bostwick earned a win by defeating Violand, 141-135.

In Horsemanship, NM State fell 3-1 as Lauren DeVoe garnered the only point for the Aggies with a 151-140.5 victory over Hillery Baysinger. DeVoe was the high point scorer for the day in Horsemanship.

The Reining team, split 2-2, as Brynn Larson beat Danielle Baker 146.5-146. Larson’s score was the high point score of the day in Reining. Stefanie Story accounted for the second point for the Aggies with a 139-135.5 win over Raievenne Scott.

The Aggies will be back in the arena tomorrow to face Fresno State in the final regular season match up.
