WACO, Texas – the New Mexico State equestrian team competed in the first round of the 2013 National Collegiate Equestrian Association National Championship, at the Extraco Events Center. The NM State Hunter Seat team was seeded No. 11 and faced SMU in the first round, while the Western team was seeded No. 12 and took on South Carolina.
The Hunter Seat team fought hard but fell 6-2 overall to SMU, tying 2-2 in Equitation on the Flat and dropping Equitation over Fences, 4-0. In Equitation on the Flat, Emily McConnell defeated SMU’s Greer Hindle, 132-109, while Hannah Swarthout beat Paulena Johnson, 153-131. Swarthout’s score of 153 was the highest score in the head-to-head competition between the two schools.
The Western team also battled till the end but couldn’t overtake South Caroline, falling 6-2 as well. The Aggies scored one point in both Horsemanship and Reining. Brynn Larson defeated Audrey Jewell, 138-136 in Reining, as Lauren DeVoe beat Katie Kopf, 145.5-142. The Aggies lost four very close head-to-head match-ups, all within four points of each other.
