WACO, Texas - The New Mexico State equestrian team opened the 2012-13 season with a win over Delaware State, 10-6, as the Hunter Seat team won 7-1, while the Western team went 3-5 in their competition.

"I was really pleased with our entire team and their effort in our first competition of the season," head coach Robin Morris-Walters said. "I thought the Hunter Seat really stepped it up today and rode well despite not having a coach. The Western team had a few bumps today but I think we will learning a lot from today and come back tomorrow ready to compete. Overall I was very happy with the results."

In Equitation on the Flat, the Aggies dominated with a 4-0 win as Hannah Swarthout, Samantha Stephens, Emily McConnell and Laura Bostwick all earned points for NM State. McConnell was named MOP (Most Outstanding Player) of the Flat competition.

McConnell and Bostwick would earn their second win of the day in Equitation over Fences, while Amber Tassel also earned a point for the Aggies. Bostwick was named MOP, as NM State won the Equitation over Fences 3-1.

On the Western side, the Aggies had a few bumps but earned three points to help the Aggies with overall team win. In Horsemanship, Jessica Woolsey was the lone Aggie to win her head-to-head match-up, while Brynn Larson and Marissa Bartmann earned a point each for the Aggies in Reining.

The Aggies also competed against Ohio State in Western and Miami-Ohio in Hunter Seat. The Aggies currently lead that competition 6-2 as a team.

NM State will be back in the arena tomorrow to take on Baylor and finish its competition versus Ohio State and Miami-Ohio.
