Aggie Tennis Teams Earn Academic Success

Las Cruces, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s and women’s tennis programs were each honored with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Award, the ITA announced this week. The individual Scholar Athlete list was also released. The teams are among six Western Athletic Conference teams named to the list.

The men’s team led the WAC with eight ITA Scholar Athletes, while receiving the All-Academic Team award for the second straight year.  The women’s team garnered six scholar athletes and made the team list for the 10th time in 11 years.

Junior Germain Degardin, sophomores Thomas Douglas, Liam Goldberg, Jeremy Harlas, juniors Patrick Pfister, Strahinja Trecakov and seniors Naveen Manivannan and Marc Westgate were named to the ITA Scholar Athlete list. This is the second straight season for Degardin, Harlas, Manivannan, Westgate and Pfister and the first honor for Trecakov, Goldberg and Douglas.

On the women’s side, junior Susana Alcaraz, freshman Brittany Collens and sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava picked up the award for the first time as Aggies, sophomore Mia Brandt and junior Denise Van Der Ben were named to the individual list for the second time and departed senior Annemieke Witte garnered the award for the fourth straight season.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. All eligible student-athletes have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2013 and spring 2014).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

Both teams earned success on the court as well. The men finished the year 12-11 (3-0 WAC) and the women 11-12 (1-0 WAC). Both teams finished the season by reaching the finals of the 2014 WAC Championships this spring.
