Van Der Ben Falls to Nationally-Ranked Player

LAS VEGAS, Nev. New Mexico State University women’s tennis player Denise Van Der Ben lost her third-round match to No. 41 Lucia Batta of UNLV in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, during Friday’s play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional Tournament.

The Aggie junior was the last player left for NM State on the winner’s bracket side of the tournament.

On the consolation side of the bracket, the Aggie duo of freshman Brittany Collens and sophomore Mia Brandt defeated their counterparts from Utah State, 8-4.

Collens also had a consolation win in singles play, getting by Adriana Nieto of Northern Colorado, 6-4, 7-6. Junior Susana Alcaraz, meanwhile, also had a straight-set consolation win on Friday, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Nevada’s Monika Magusiak.

Seniors Ros-Polly Nguyen and Annemieke Witte both suffered straight-set losses on the consolations side.

The ITA Mountain Regional continues throughout the weekend, concluding on Sunday.
