SAN DIEGO – The New Mexico State University women’s tennis team concluded play at the San Diego State University Fall Classic on Sunday by bringing home an individual title and falling in a doubles championship match.

Aggie sophomore Mia Brandt, who was competing in the Silver Draw at the Aztec Tennis Center, defeated host San Diego State’s Olivia Larsson in the championship match of her draw in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.  Brandt becomes the third player from NM State to win a bracket this season, joining freshman Brittany Collens and junior Susana Alcaraz who won at the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces.

In doubles play, Alcaraz and junior Denise Van Der Ben were also playing for their draw’s championship.  The tandem was involved in a tough battle against Janaki Gunuganti and Frederique Van de Velde of Grand Canyon University.  Unfortunately, NM State ended up a couple of points short of the championship, losing 8-6.

In all, it was a very productive weekend for the Aggies.  NM State picked up a total of 18 wins throughout the weekend.

“Overall it was very good showing for us this weekend,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “It was extremely tough competition and we won the most number of matches we have ever won here in San Diego.”

Other Aggies winning in single matches on Sunday were Alcaraz who defeated Marta Stojanovic of San Diego, Van Der Ben who won over Loyola Marymount’s Laura Mueller, senior Ros-Polly Nguyen who defeated Gunuganti of Gran Canyon and sophomore Chloe Jolliff who beat Taylor Young also of Grand Canyon.

The duos of Brandt/Jolliff and Nguyen and senior Annemieke Witte also collected wins for NM State in doubles play during the final day of the tournament.

The Aggies now look forward to participating in the ITA Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev., to conclude the fall schedule.  The five-day tournament is slated to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and continue through Sunday, Oct. 13.

“I’m very proud of how the team is competing this fall,” Fernandez said. “They have shown me a lot through their hard work and commitment.”
