LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team broke out of its drought for a 5-2 win over Western Athletic Conference foe Utah State during the final weekend of spring play at the NM State Tennis Center, on Friday, April 12.

The Aggies started things off by winning just one doubles match and giving USU a 1-0 lead. Senior Jodie Williams and Denise Van Der Ben worked their way to an 8-4 victory at court two, but the other two pairs of Aggies fell at courts one and three.

“I am really proud of the girls. We had our backs up against the wall going into the singles and we came out strong and won five of the six singles matches,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “They had to come out and win today to make it into the WAC Championships. It was a lot of pressure but they stepped up and got the win.”

In singles play, the Aggies came up with wins at each court but No. 1. In straight sets, senior Ginet Pinero and Van Der Ben worked for wins at the second and third spots. Pinero went 6-1, 6-2 for the win to start off the final home weekend of her Aggie career.

Annemieke Witte battled for a 7-6 win in game one of her match and finished strong with a 6-4 victory and the point at No. 4. Ros-Polly Nguyen and Mia Brandt knocked off the blue Aggies at courts five and six, helped NM State secure the 5-2 win at home.

“After some tough matches last weekend, it was good to come back and get the conference win at home, especially before Senior Day,” Fernandez said.

The Aggies round out the 2013 spring schedule with a battle against the Seattle Redhawks on Denver, April 14 at 10 a.m. Both the Aggie seniors will be honored at the match.
