SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team dropped its Western Athletic Conference match to UT Arlington 4-0 on Friday, April 5. The Aggies move to 5-12 this season and 1-4 in conference play.

“We had a chance to win doubles, but could not pull it off,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We have to refocus and get ready for Idaho tomorrow and UTSA on Sunday.”

With the Aggies battling for the doubles point, the Aggie pair at the first and third position worked for tough matches before falling and giving the point to the Mavericks. Senior Ginet Pinero and Denise Van Der Ben worked the top doubles court to an 8-6 decision going in favor of UTA. Annemieke Witte and Mia Brandt also worked at the third spot before falling 9-7.

NM State struggled to find its ground as three singles matches went to the Mavericks before the Aggies could make a comeback. Senior Jodie Williams went down in two sets (6-0, 6-1) at the second court.

Witte and Brandt went down in straight sets as well. Witte was sent away 6-0, 7-5 at the fourth spot, while Brandt fell at court six 6-2 and 6-1.

NM State continues with WAC play against Idaho on Saturday, April 6, and UTSA on Sunday April 7.
