IRVINE, Calif. (Feb. 23) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team lost for the second consecutive day in California on Saturday, losing to UC Irvine, the 59th ranked team in the country, 7-0.  The Aggies now move to 1-4 on the season.

"We actually played a little better than yesterday," head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "Unfortunately, our opponent was stronger today."

In singles matches, Ginet Pinero, playing at the three spot, fought tooth-and-nail before eventually losing her match in three sets.  After losing the first set, Pinero came back to take set two, 7-5.  She lost a close third set by a final score of 10-7.

The Aggies lost the other five singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles play, Jodie Williams and Denise Van Der Ben came within a couple of points of defeating an Anteater team that included the 41st ranked player in the country, UC Irvine's Franziska Goettsching.  The match remained closed throughout but Williams and Van Der Ben eventually lost, 8-6.

NM State would go on to lose its other two doubles matches as well.

The Aggies will conclude their weekend west-coast road trip on Sunday (Feb. 24) when they face off with Cal State Northridge.

"We have to stay positive and be ready to play Northridge in the morning," Fernandez said.

The Aggies finish the weekend against the Matadors on Sunday, Feb. 24. For a recap of Sunday's results and everything else concerning Aggie women's tennis keep logging on to NMStateSports.com.
