Women’s Tennis Splits Season Opener

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (Feb. 9) - The New Mexico state women's tennis team split its two matches on Saturday, Feb. 10. First, the Aggies were swept by the host UNLV Rebels 7-0. Later in the day, the Aggies redeemed themselves with a 5-2 win over Weber State.

With the No. 57 Rebels taking the doubles point to start off the match, before the Aggies battled to try and make a comeback in singles competition. At the No. 1 spot, senior Jodie Williams fell in straight sets to 20th-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska 6-1 and 6-3. With each of the other Aggies doing down in two sets also, Annemieke Witte was able to take her opponent, Janine Erasmus, to four tough sets before the point was decided. Going down 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9), Witte was unable to hold out for the point at the No. 4 position.

NM State Came back in the second dual of the day with a 5-2 win over Weber State, beginning with a sweep for the doubles point. Williams and Denise Van Der Ben were able to start things with an 8-2 win at the top doubles spot. As Ginet Pinero and Witte were able to lock in the point with an 8-5 win at the second spot.

The top two singles spots were left unfinished as the Aggies in the next three positions were able to secure Aggie points for the win. Pinero took her match in two straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 3 spot, while Witte and Ros-Polly Nguyen each picked up the point in straight sets as well.

NM State's only single loss came at the sixth position when Lisa Roslanova went down 6-1 and 6-2.

The Aggies finish the season-opening weekend against Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m.
