LAS VEGAS (Oct. 11)-The New Mexico State women's tennis team opened the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championships with three Aggies advancing to the second round of singles action after a first day that had multiple weather delays.

Senior Ginet Pinero led the Aggies and won her first round match over Malia Wahinepio of Northern Arizona, 7-6, 6-2. Sophomore Denise Van Der Ben defeated Kaley Schultz of Colorado State, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. Freshman Lisa Roslanova also advanced to the second round after Caroline Schnell of Denver defaulted.

"After an on and off rain delay day, the two shining players were senior Ginet Pinero and sophomore Denise Van Der Den," head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "They both won their first-round singles matches. The second round matches were postponed until Thursday due to the rain. Ginet and Denise are the top two returners from last year's team. It is good to see them come out fighting. "

In her first regional, freshman Mia Brandt fell to Kristi Elmer of Weber State, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Jodie Williams lost to Jaci West of Utah State, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Annemieke Witte fell to Jessica Parizher of Wyoming, 6-0, 6-3, and junior Ros-Polly Nguyen suffered a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Morgan Basil of Boise State.

Since the weather wreaked havoc on the tournament schedule, organizers decided to postpone the second round of singles until Thursday, and move up the first round of doubles to Wednesday night.

In doubles action, Pinero and Nguyen teamed against Bobbie Oshiro and Megan Lalone of Boise State but fell 8-5. Witte and Brandt lost to Parizher and Silviya Zhekyazkova of Wyoming, 8-1. Williams and Van Der Ben's match was postponed until Thursday.
