Release:  09/26/2012

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 26) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team continues its fall schedule this weekend at the SDSU Fall Classic hosted by San Diego State beginning Friday.

The three-day individual tournament features different flights of both singles and doubles draws. Expected to join the Aggies this weekend are players from the following schools: Cal State Northridge, Loyola Marymount, North Texas, Pepperdine, San Diego and the host Aztecs.

Led by seniors Ginet Pinero and Jodie Williams, seven NM State players are eligible to compete this weekend in singles as well as doubles.

Junior Annemieke Witte led the team two weeks ago at the Aggie Invitational held at the NM State Tennis Center. She rattled off three singles victory en route to her first career championship match appearance where she finished as runner-up. Witte was one of six Aggies that finished the opening tourney with at least two wins and a winning record.

Returning players will be familiar with the courts at SDSU after participating in the tournament last season. The Aggies found success on the final day of 2011 tournament by winning all three scheduled doubles matches as well as a trio of singles matches. Witte and sophomore Denise Van Der Ben scored both doubles and singles wins on the final day in San Diego last year.

The Aggies concluded the 2012 regular season with a 12-8 record in head coach Ivan Fernandez' second season as head coach. NM State finished the year 1-2 against Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opponents, good for the No. 4 seed in the WAC tournament hosted by the Aggies last April.  NM State fought back from an early deficit to defeat No. 5 seed San Jose State 4-2 in the WAC quarterfinals then pushed top seeded Fresno State to the limit in a 4-3 semifinal loss to the Bulldogs.
