LAS CRUCES, N.M. (April 20) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team hosts its Rio Grande Rival, the University of New Mexico, in the rivals' annual matchup to end the regular season at 10 a.m. MT Saturday at the NM State Tennis Center.
The Aggies will celebrate the careers of their two seniors, Natalia Salum and Manon Sylvain, in a ceremony on Saturday. Salum leads the Aggies with 12 dual-match wins this season, playing predominantly at No. 4 singles where she is 9-2. Sylvain has led NM State at the No. 1 spot all season where she is 8-7 on the year.
The Aggies (10-7, 1-2 WAC) have won two straight matches at home this season after a 7-0 victory over Western New Mexico on Wednesday. The Lobos (8-11, 1-6 MW) enter the match on a two-match losing streak and have dropped six of their last seven contests. The rivalry match was rescheduled to Saturday after severe winds and blowing dust postponed the original matchup slated for March 2.
This weekend's matchup against is the final regular-season match on the schedule for both squads before the postseason begins next week. The Aggies host the 2012 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) next week beginning Thursday, April, 26. For tournament tickets contact the NM State Ticket Office at (575) 646-1420.
Last season, NM State head coach Ivan Fernandez guided the Aggies to their first road win in the rivalry since 2001. The Aggies have won two straight over the Lobos after the 4-3 win last year in Albuquerque. The Crimson and White rolled UNM 6-1 during the foes' last meeting in Las Cruces in 2010, snapping a seven-match Lobo win streak in the series.
Last time out against WNMU, Aggie sophomore Ros-Polly Nguyen won her seventh straight singles match. Three Aggies did not surrender a game to their Mustang opponents. Sophomore Annemieke Witte, classmate Nguyen and freshman Denise Van Der Ben each won a double-bagel match at Nos. 5, 6 and 2 respectively.
